The materials you need for this experiment include a ruler, masking tape, a marker or highlighter, and buttons.

Now we’re gonna build a lever. A lever is a device that helps us move an object when that object is placed on one end of the lever and you press down on the other end.

Tape a highlighter to the tabletop, near the edge of the table. A lever works when a bar moves over a pivot point called a fulcrum. This highlighter is our fulcrum.

Lay a ruler on top of the fulcrum with the fulcrum in the center. Move anything that might break or spill when buttons start flying through the air. Make sure you don’t hurt anyone!

Place a button on the end of the ruler, and launch it by pressing down on the other end. Ready for takeoff!

Woah! That button went far. Try experimenting by shifting the lever on the fulcrum. How does this affect how far the button flies?
