The materials you need for this experiment include an empty two-liter soda bottle, 3/4 cup of vinegar, 1 tablespoon of baking soda, and a balloon.
Take off the cap, and pour the vinegar into the bottle. Then, pour the baking soda into the bottle as well. Once the baking soda is in, quickly put the mouth of the balloon over the bottle opening. It might be helpful to practice putting the balloon on the bottle quickly before you do the actual experiment so you can get the hang of it.
Gently shake the baking soda and vinegar mixture, and observe what happens.
Woah! Check it out! The balloon is inflating! Whatโs going on here?
When you combine baking soda and vinegar, the two chemicals undergo a chemical reaction. A chemical reaction is when two chemicals react to each other to form a new chemical or chemicals. In this case, baking soda and vinegar combine to form water, some chemical called sodium acetate, and carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is a gas, and itโs the chemical filling the balloon!
